Into

into Pearl River Delta

»The Pearl River is fed by a variety of tributaries just like the variety of its cities and the people living in them. The river is what unites all these cities lining the Pearl River Delta so heavily influenced by the water that flows through and with them. To a composer they feel like a polyphonic score.«
Johannes Schöllhorn

Along the mouth of the Pearl River flowing into the South China Sea lie several cities counting over a million inhabitants. These cities in Guangdong Province including Guangzhou (the former Canton), Shenzhen and Dongguan are now growing into the enormous conglomeration that is the Pearl River Delta, to which also belong the former European Colonies Hongkong and Macao. This enormous conurbation was consciously developed using state support from the 1970s to become the super agglomeration of enormous economic significance that it is today. Hand in hand with rapid economic growth the region’s population is now also exploding. In the Pearl River Delta Chinese tradition and western-oriented modernity coexist in close proximity.
